In the newest episode of David Letterman’s show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Jay-Z opened up about his marriage to Beyonce and the infidelity that went on, and how the power couple worked their way through it.
We all knew it happened: from the infamous video of Solange, Beyonce’s sister, attacking Jay-Z in an elevator in 2014 while Beyonce stood by, to her own lyrics from Lemonade (2016), there was a whole slew of hints that Jay-Z had been dishonest to her.
For example, Beyonce sang in Pray You Catch Me from Lemonade; “You can taste the dishonesty/ It’s on your breath, as you pass it up so cavalier,” and about “Becky with the good hair” in Sorry from the same album.
However, it wasn’t till November 2017 that Jay-Z confirmed the rumors by talking about his cheating in an interview with The New York Times.
Last Friday, in the latest episode of David Letterman’s new show, the talk show host asked the rapper about his marriage, using his own admitted infidelity from the past as a base to open the conversation.
“At the time, the pain that I caused myself was the fear that I had blown up my family. I never talked to a person who had been in that situation. And I’m wondering if this rings a bell with you,” Letterman said.
Jay-Z talked about being raised without the adequate tools for communication in response, saying, “For a lot of us, especially where I grew up and men in general, we don’t have emotional cues from when we were young. Our emotional cue is ‘Be a man. Don’t cry.’”
He referenced his song, Song Cry, in which he says, “I can’t see ’em coming down my eyes, so I gotta make the song cry,” saying that it was his way of showing his emotions about the issue.
“It was my way of saying I want to cry, I want to be open, I want to have the emotional tools that it takes to keep my family together. Much like you, I have a beautiful wife who was understanding and who knew I’m not the worst of what I’ve done.” the rapper said.
He also talked about the work he and Beyonce put into recovering from the incident; “We did the hard work of going to therapy. We love each other, so we really put in the work for years.”
He added that they are now past it and he feels he grew exponentially due to the experience; “I like to believe we’re in a better place today. I’m proud of the father and the husband that I am today,” he said.
Jay-Z also explained that he talks about this issue now because of the frequency with which the kids of today are seeing relationships break down. He wants to give hope that no matter what, it is workable and fixable if the partners in a relationship want to work on it and fix it.
He stated, “We just see people give up. The divorce rate is 50 percent. We never see people [who say] ‘Okay, let’s work through this. I love you; I love my family.’”
The next episode of Letterman’s new show is set to release in May 2018, where he will interview Howard Stern. The final episode of the show will release in June, and Tina Fey will appear in it.
